Polo ‘Not About Looking Posh’ Says Top Player

The fact that polo is a sport often enjoyed by the well-heeled might leave some feeling that getting involved is a little bit above their station. However, one of the world’s top players has suggested this is anything but the case.

Speaking to the Robb Report, Argentina’s Nacho Figueras said the traditional image of the sport as one in which only the most stylish and expensive attire could be worn was wide of the mark.

He said: “The beauty of polo is that you don’t have to be fancy to attend or even play,” noting that rather than dressing up like someone attending one of the grand royal equine occasions such as Ascot, more casual attire – even sports coats and T-shirts – is perfectly acceptable. “Whatever you feel comfortable with” is fine, he said.

There is a caveat, of course; Figueras noted that there are a few occasions on the polo calendar that genuinely warrant a step up in sartorial class, such as the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, a tournament for which he is an ambassador. This event “definitely inspires you to dress up a bit more, since the setup is super cool and elevated,” he acknowledged.

Nacho Figueras is no stranger to blending sporting prowess with fashion. Indeed, his status as both a player and a man never seen badly dressed has led to him being nicknamed the David Beckham of polo

Even so, the fact that the sport does not ordinarily place a huge burden on people to dress a certain way to attend may come as a relief, not least as this means those just getting interested in the sport can focus more on the horses, equipment and the development of their own skills out on the field. After all, nobody will worry too much about fancy clothing when they spot an emerging talent.
