Any British polo lovers planning ahead for the summer season will be focusing much of their present interest overseas, where major events are taking place in warmer climes and the southern hemisphere, not least Australia.
It may have been an unusually wet summer Down Under, but that has not stopped the great and the good from turning up at some major polo events of late.
Among them have been Zara Tindall and husband Mike, who took part in the 2023 Magic Millions polo event alongside other celebrities such as Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky. While former England rugby star Mike was content to watch the event on the Gold Coast in Queensland, former Sports Personality of the Year Zara was keen to show off her horse skills again.
Magic Millions is a charity event and Zara Tindall has been a regular attendee and participant over the last decade alongside many other famous faces.
Also at the event was Argentinean superstar Nacho Figueras, who is a close friend of a royal with a slightly higher profile at the moment, Prince Harry. He and his wife were at the royal wedding to Meghan Markle and Harry himself is a keen polo player.
The presence of such individuals will keep the profile of the sport high in Australia and elsewhere, be it a celebrity appearance or the participation of one of the world’s best players.
Figueras, nicknamed the ‘David Beckham of Polo’, has certainly been attracting plenty of attention, being pictured at a show jumping event alongside his wife in between taking part in polo events on the Gold Coast.
Upcoming polo events of note in Australia include the Victorian Polo Association Ladies Championships 2023, Twilight Beach Polo 2023 in Melbourne, the Melbourne City Polo Cup, the VALLEX Cup 2023 and the Yaloak tournament for the Ballarat Cup.
