Polo is an exhilarating and fast paced game, and to enjoy it at its best, good horsemanship is required. For those who are looking to improve their skills in the saddle in order to get the most out of polo lessons, there are a few techniques off the field that are very useful to know.
First of all, good core strength and a supple physique are the key attributes of a skilled rider. The more balanced and capable of absorbing the horses’ movement you are, the easier your load will be for the horse to carry, and the more willing and agile he is likely to be. Core strength can easily be worked on without the need for gym equipment.
The core muscles are those around the trunk and pelvis, which are important to keep a rider still and strong in the saddle. By training the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen to work in a coordinated fashion, you will soon notice the difference both in the saddle and even simply going about daily activities.
The classic core exercise is the plank. To achieve the plank position, start in a press-up position, then bend your elbows until your forearms are on the floor beneath your shoulders. Keep your body in a straight line from feet to head. Tighten your abs and keep your neck and spine in a level position. Hold for 30 seconds, or as long as you can.
Bridges are also great for core strength. Lie on your back with your knees bent and the spine in a neutral position. Tighten the abs, and then raise your hips off the floor until they are aligned with your knees and shoulders. Hold for as long as you can.
Swimming, fitness ball exercises, and weights are also perfect activities to get you match fit!
