Making the decision to start polo lessons can be very exciting but you may be nervous about your first lesson. There is nothing to worry about as a beginner, as your teachers will help you get to grips with everything to ensure you are comfortable and confident.
It isn’t expected that you have your own polo horse when starting out. Most polo schools will have their own trained polo horses to make the process much easier. If you do have your own horse, this is absolutely fine as well, just be sure to let our instructor know.
If you have no previous riding experience, fear not. Many people start polo lessons having never ridden a horse before. All the basics of riding will be covered in your lessons therefore you can take up polo even if you have never even sat on horseback before!
It also isn’t expected for you to have all the right gear to begin with. You may not wish to go and purchase any expensive clothing before you know if this is something you will enjoy, so dressing appropriately is fine as well.
Long trousers, protective and sturdy footwear such as riding boots and a comfortable top are good enough to begin with. You may also wish to wear gloves if you are worried about the reins hurting your hands.
Each lesson will be different, depending on your skill and experience level. Your instructor will assess which areas need to be worked on the most, such as building up riding experience before tackling the game itself, so there is no need to worry.
Once you have had your first few lessons and are comfortable riding and controlling your horse, you will find that you pick up everything else very easily!
