A Brief Look At The History Of Polo, The Sport Of Kings

Polo is an ancient sport which has been played since what seems to be the beginning of time. It is a majestic sport, pairing athleticism and elegance. Polo horses are among some of the most agile and beautiful creatures on the planet, and their riders the most talented sportsmen.

Polo has spanned over centuries and while the exact origins of the game are unknown, we can find evidence of its roots in many different countries, spanning across all continents.

This just goes to show just how global this game was and how it continues to be a popular sport amongst people across the globe, from all different cultures and backgrounds.

There is some debate about where polo originated. There is evidence to suggest both Persia and Ancient China were the birthplace of Polo, however the exact location it was founded remains unknown.

However, the spread of polo across the globe as a popular sport is well documented. It found its way across central Asia, spreading to all corners of the globe.

Polo began to evolve and change in India, where many of the modern rules of the game were first established. The sport now had structure and a rulebook, establishing it as a true sport and no longer a mere game.

In the colonial era, Britain adopted polo as one of their favoured sports and many could often be found engaging in the game. The rules were further refined and it became more and more popular.

The sport of kings, as it is often referred to, was named so as it became a popular pastime amongst the European aristocracy. The sport which has no definitive origins was not a popular game amongst the wealthy and influential.

Today, polo is enjoyed as both a hobby sport and professional competitive sport, showing it  has remained popular through the entirety of history.
