New Polo Centre Planned For East Sussex

The town of Polegate in East Sussex may be getting a new polo centre if plans submitted to Wealden District Council are approved.

The Eastbourne Herald reports that documents submitted to the council show plans for a site at Milton Gate Farm on the edge of the South Downs National Park, comprising of 64.4 acres of farmland, which is currently undeveloped.

The land had been previously used for arable farming, but is currently vacant and includes a partially completed farmhouse and two barns.

The plans, if they are approved, would see the barns removed to make room for the development of a 275m by 145m polo pitch, a block of 12 stables, and various equipment storage rooms.

According to the documents provided by Dove Properties, there are plans to ‘transform this property into a unique private equestrian facility,  sympathetic to the environment and ensuring a haven for wildlife and nesting birds.’

They also state that 12 horses would be permanently base on-site, with more visiting on match days, which means that for security purposes, on-site supervision would be required, so the farmhouse has been earmarked for renovation so that the equestrian manager can live on site.

The documents also state that there will be no floodlighting, and there are no nearby residents who would be disturbed.

The design and access statement said, “It is an open recreational use in the countryside which is appropriate, and although there is slightly larger scale than usual and for a use which is probably unusual in this part of East Sussex, it fits in well with the countryside, is close to local amenities, and will provide an opportunity for some local jobs.”
