The second big polo event of the year in Britain is set for an exciting final as Scone and UAE made it through to the final of the Queen’s Cup at Guards Polo Club on Sunday June 27th.
Scone won a classic semi-final against Monterosso 11-8, knocking out the favourites, who had until then been the only undefeated side in the tournament.
The Scone attack had been led by father and son team Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso, who were in devastating form as they repeatedly teed up hotshot Isidro Strada, who scored nine times in the match. Scone stormed into a 6-0 lead early on, but Monterosso dug deep and pulled back some ground to make the score 7-3 at half time.
In the second half, Scone faced a tough challenge as Monterosso fought back and scored five times, but the Cambiasos, who each scored once, and Strada kept them in front to secure their final berth.
The other match saw the UAE face UAE 2nds, an indicator of just how strong the sport is in that country right now. In a tight contest, the UAE 2nds were twice in front at the end of chukkas, leading 2-1 after the first and 7-6 after the third. UAE managed to sneak 10-9 in front with just one chukka left to play, before moving clear at the end to finish 13-10 winners.
After two thrilling semi-finals, the denoument of the tournament should be an epic event, perhaps even as exciting a final as the Prince of Wales Trophy final in Windsor earlier this month, when Thai Polo beat Monterosso 13-12 in sudden death extra time.
The third and final major polo tournament of the English summer will be the Gold Cup, which starts next week and runs until July 25th. After losing a final and a semi-final, the brilliant Monterosso team will be particularly keen to ensure they don’t end the season without silverware.
