The modern game of polo originated in the tiny north-eastern Indian state of Manipur, and it is still popular there today. The rare local breed of Manipuri ponies are used for players of the game, as they embody the qualities of speed, strength, and stamina needed to excel in the sport. However, the survival of this special pony is threatened by dwindling numbers.
The Manipuri is the reason that even today, polo horses are still known as ponies, whatever their size. They were originally used as cavalry mounts, before being adopted as the original polo pony. The equines are considered sacred in Manipur, and are not slaughtered for meat or used for labour. However, their numbers have declined alarmingly in recent years.
Just 20 years ago, there were thousands of Manipuri ponies scattered around the wetlands of the state. Today, the numbers are thought to be around 500. The reason for this is largely because their native grazing lands are being taken away by rapid urban development. Some of the ponies have taken to foraging in waste dumps, where they can eat toxic materials.
To tackle the critically low numbers, the Manipuri Horse Riding and Polo Association have set up a stud farm to encourage the ponies to breed. Steps are also being taken to improve the welfare of the endangered breed, Polo People Places explains. It is hoped that a government-funded clinic can be set up to care for the ponies’ basic needs.
The US international women’s polo player Pamela Flanagan has set in motion a campaign to gather new or used tack and supplies, to ensure that the ponies are healthy and comfortable during their performance in polo matches. She also hopes to organise educational clinics and fundraisers to raise awareness of equine welfare.
Not only will this help to preserve a unique and special breed, but it will also protect the culture and history of the Manipur region.
