Thai Polo Celebrate Prince Of Wales Trophy Win

Thai Polo has secured victory in the Prince of Wales Trophy, the first major polo event of the English season.

A gripping final saw the team win 13-12 in overtime against Monterosso at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club in Windsor, the Bangkok Post reports.

Led by Harald Link, the Thai Polo team produced an outstanding performance in attack, with 18-year old Ned Hine and Louis Hine both scoring outstanding goals to give the side a flying start.

Then, as the game continued, Ale Muzzio produced some outstanding work and Rufino Bensado proved adept at scoring penalties, ensuring the team was 11-9 ahead in the final chukka.

However, the Prince of Wales Cup is one of the top tournaments and anyone seeking to win it will always have to overcome some outstanding and resilient opponents.

So it proved as Montessoro fought back hard, with Pelon Stirling leading a fightback that saw them edge 12-11 ahead with just a minute left on the clock.

However, Bensadon managed to score from a 60-yard penalty at the very end, a stroke that required both skill and temperament.

With extra-time now needed, both teams chased the winning goal and missed chances before Thai Polo captain Alejandro Muzzio hit a 100-yard pass to find Louis Hine, who held his nerve to hit the winner.

Hine’s mare Irinita Dama won the Best Playing Pony award, while the prize for Most Valuable Player went to Bensadon, scorer of seven goals including his nerveless equalising penalty.

It was a grand victory for Thai Polo in one of England’s big three tournaments, alongside the Queen’s Cup and the Gold Cup.

Polo lovers will be hoping for equally thrilling action in those tournaments, with the Queens Cup being played through June with the final taking place on the 27th, while the Gold Cup runs from June 29th to July 25th.
